The Costa da Morte (Coast of Death) is on the northwest shore of Spain and faces the open Atlantic Ocean. Unlike Spain’s Mediterranean shore, its Atlantic coast is rugged and rocky, and prone to storms and fog. Since the 14th century, more than 600 ships have been lost in these waters, costing thousands of lives. Adding to its ominous reputation is the fact that centuries ago, when people believed the world was flat, the westernmost cape on the Costa da Morte was thought to be where the known world ended.
