Nabonidus, king of Babylon and the last native ruler of ancient Mesopotamia, is known chiefly as a religious reformer. But he’s also considered the first archaeologist for his discovery and restoration of the temples of Akkadian ruler Naram-Sin, who lived 1,700 years before Nabonidus. He led many excavations and attempted to date artifacts he found. His reign ended in 539 BCE when Babylon fell to the Achaemenid Empire.
