Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, disappeared over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 along with her navigator Fred Noonan while attempting to fly around the world. After many failed searches, she was declared dead in 1939. Earhart was last seen on Lae, New Guinea, en route to Howland Island in the central Pacific. She remains one of our most celebrated pilots and, because of the mystery of her disappearance, the continued object of fascination.
