Although most of the national parks are in the western US, the most popular by far is the Smokies which straddles North Carolina and Tennessee in the south-east. Part of the reason is its accessibility and proximity to many major cities. In 2021, it received 14 million visitors. By comparison, five million visited Zion, 4.8 million visited Yellowstone, and 4.5 million visited the Grand Canyon. Only 7,000 visited the remote Gates of the Arctic in Alaska, the state with the second-highest number of national parks: eight. California has the most with nine.
