The Quiz: What type of aerial sport are these high flyers enjoying?
These curved, inflatable kites are the unmistakable sight of kitesurfing, one of the youngest and most exciting of board sports, and a cousin to windsurfing which is happening below on the surface of the water. Windsurfing evolved in the 1970s, a combination of surfing and sailing. Kitesurfing evolved in the 1990s with a basic concept – separate the board from the sail and fly it like a kite, which is attached to the kitesurfer by a long harness. The innovation provided more freedom and speed, allowing kitesurfers to launch themselves high into the air. Both windsurfers and kitesurfers can ride waves, but these sports do not require them the way traditional surfing does.
The correct answer to this quiz is Kiteboarding.
