‘Old Glory’ was the name William Driver of Massachusetts gave to the US flag presented to him when he took command of his own merchant ship at age 21 in 1824. The flag accompanied Driver during his voyages around the world. When he defiantly flew Old Glory at his Tennessee home during the Civil War, it became a popular symbol of patriotism. Today, Driver’s flag is in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
