Located in modern-day Iran, Persepolis served as the capital of the Achaemenid Empire, which was founded in 550 BCE and ruled for two centuries. At the time it was the largest empire in the world. Inspired by Mesopotamian architecture, the palace complex was on a huge terrace partly built, partly carved into the base of a mountain. Today the ruins are a World Heritage Site.
