The Quiz: It’s National Bison Month. Where in the United States has there been a continuous herd since prehistoric times?
A Yellowstone National Park
B Rocky Mountain National Park
C Badlands National Park
While present-day Rocky Mountain National Park and Badlands National Park were once home to bison herds, Yellowstone is the only place in the country where there have always been bison as long as people were around to marvel at them. As a result, the Yellowstone bison are believed to be among the only remaining genetically ‘pure’ bison.
Devastating overhunting in the 1800s wiped out the bison populations in most of the country, including from the lands that would become Rocky Mountain and Badlands National Parks. Fifty bison were reintroduced at Badlands in 1963 and have since grown to a herd of over 1,000.
The correct answer to this quiz is Yellowstone National Park.
