The Quiz: The area now called Capitol Reef National Park was first proposed as a protected area named what?

A Bridge to Nowhere
B Wayne Wonderland
C Golden Arches

This is Hickman Bridge, a natural arch named for Joseph Hickman who, with his brother-in-law Ephraim P. Pectol, formed an advocacy group in 1921 to promote what they called Wayne Wonderland. They later settled on ‘Capitol Reef’ because the rounded domes of Navajo Sandstone reminded them of the famous rotunda of the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC. The ‘Reef’ portion of the name comes from the fact that the imposing formations were major obstacles to travelers through the region, the same way a coral reef is an obstacle to sailors.

The correct answer to this quiz is Wayne Wonderland.
