Since 1966, Louisiana’s state bird has been the brown pelican—one of three types of pelican found in the Americas. Our picture shows Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, an important stopover on the Pacific Flyway for migratory birds. It plays host to approximately 90% of American white pelicans as well as many other migratory species.
