Before he joined the Royal Navy, James Cook moved to Staithes when he was 16, in 1745, to work as a grocer’s apprentice and is said to have got his first taste for the ocean by staring out of the shop window. He left Staithes for nearby Whitby, where he joined the Navy and went on to become famous for his voyages to New Zealand and Australia in particular.
