Microsoft Rewards Bing Homepage Quiz: Which New Zealand lake starred in ‘The Hobbit’ films?
A Lake Ohau
B Lake Tekapo
C Lake Pukaki
Here on New Zealand’s South Island, three roughly parallel alpine lakes were formed by receding glaciers. Lake Pukaki is the largest; the other two are Ohau and Tekapo, seen in our image. All three have this distinctive blue color, created by glacial flour, the extremely finely ground rock particles from the glaciers.
The dragon Smaug glided over the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy. Director Peter Jackson built Lake-town (or Esgaroth) on Pukaki’s shore, but none of the structures remain today.
The correct answer is Lake Pukaki.
