Thomas Jefferson, our country’s third president, is given credit for writing the Declaration of Independence (which later inspired the French Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, and even Vietnam’s independence from France). At the time, Jefferson represented Virginia in the Continental Congress. He was also an architect, lawyer, and plantation owner. As such, he owned hundreds of slaves. Before becoming president, he was governor of Virginia, vice president to John Adams, and secretary of state to George Washington. As president he engineered the Louisiana Purchase, doubling the size of the country.
